Reading and language can often feel easier than math to incorporate into your baby’s routine. The good news is, you can actually combine reading time with math learning, and you don’t need a special math book to do it 😉

Any book with illustrations or photos can become a prompt for introducing important math lessons. Comparisons—longer, shorter, less, more—and concepts like one-to-one correspondence (the idea that a collection of objects corresponds to a specific quantity), and cardinality (the last number you count is the total) can be often be taught through these images.

Talk about everyday things

Studies show that the number of words a baby understands relates to how often they’ve heard high-frequency words that describe everyday things—objects, people, places, and actions. As much as you can, get down to eye level and show interest in what your baby is doing, looking at, and playing with—and label it. (You can engage them in what you’re doing, too.) Use these key words often, and don’t limit them just to nouns, verbs, and adjectives; use prepositions (in, out), interjections (uh-oh, whee!), and adverbs (up, down) too.

If you have a crawler (on average around 8-10 months) that needs more of a challenge, try creating a mountain of pillows. This activity is also really great for babies who have skipped crawling or are quickly trying to move past the crawling stage.⁣

With toddlers, the one thing you’ll learn quickly is that they put everything in their mouth (especially when they’re teething). Give your little one a sensory bin that pairs something new with something that’s also safe to eat (although they might not like the taste).
