From Jealousy to Joy: Making Room for Big Kids in Baby’s World

Feeling left out is common for older siblings—but you can turn those feelings into connection with a few mindful routines.

What’s Really Going On?

Even when they love their baby sibling, older children may struggle with feeling “replaced” or overlooked. They might act out—or withdraw.

Good news? You can ease those feelings by inviting them in—emotionally and playfully.

4 Strategies to Help Your Older Child Feel Seen & Connected

  1. Name Their Role in the Family
“You’re the big brother who makes her laugh!”
“She’s lucky to have a sister who sings to her!”

  2. Include Them in Baby Care—But Keep it Light
Let them help with diaper duty, or pick baby’s outfit. Keep it optional and fun—not forced.

  3. Have “Just Us” Time Too
Carve out 1:1 time for your older child—reading a chapter book, baking, or playing outside—without baby around.

  4. Celebrate Their Influence
Show them how much their sibling responds to them:
“Look how she turns when you talk!”
“He’s smiling at your silly dance!”

📌 Try This Activity: “Sibling Snapshot”

Create a photo album or collage of the two of them. Let your older child decorate it or write a “letter” to baby. It's a memory-maker and a confidence boost.
